Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) is hydronic tubing that is manufactured from polyethylene plastic with a three-dimensional molecular bond that is created within the structure of the plastic. This molecular bond improves a number of properties such as heat deformation, abrasion, chemical and stress crack resistance. The cross linking manufacturing process also produces an increase in low-temperature properties, impact and tensile strength, as well as decreasing shrinkage. Cross-linked polyethylene tubes have shape memory characteristics, which only need heat to return it to its original shape.

Cross-linked polyethylene tubes are beginning to gain popularity in many industries. Currently, cross-linked polyethylene is predominant in building services pipework systems, hydronic radiant heating and cooling systems, domestic water piping, and insulation for high voltage electrical cables. Natural gas, offshore oil applications, chemical transportation and transportation of sewage and slurries also use cross-linked polyethylene.

Key Features of Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) Cables Include:

  • High and low temperature
  • Hydrolysis resistance
  • High electrical and insulation properties
  • High abrasion resistance

  • Potable water approved
  • High extrusion speed on standard lines
  • Lower cost
  • Mechanically tougher

Performance Wire and Cable focuses on the usage of cross-linked polyethylene for insulation around our USE-2, RHW-2 and RHH cables. The cross-linked polyethylene tubing we supply is used to ensure strong, durable, temperature conducting insulation around our cables. Our USE-2, RHW-2 or RHH cables are used in raceways, duct, direct burial and aerial installations. Cables insulated with cross-linked polyethylene are a rated maximum conductor temperature of 90 degrees Celsius and an emergency rating up to 140 degrees Celsius, depending on the standard used. Cross-linking technology gives cables an ability to have a conductor short-circuit rating of 250 degrees Celsius.
